Enjoy these cheerful Swiss folk songs, brought to life by the beautiful voice of the renowned singer Chapuis. This is the first solo album for Sony Classical by Swiss mezzo-soprano Marie-Claude Chapuis, who has released recordings featuring primarily the sacred works of Bach and Mozart in collaboration with Anner Bylsma, Jacobs, and Lusse. After studying voice at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and receiving an award for excellence, she became one of the founding members of the “Innsbruck Opera Ensemble” led by Brigitte Fassbender, showcasing her beautiful voice at numerous opera houses and concert halls from Europe to Asia. Known not only for her opera and art songs but also as a performer of Swiss folk songs, on this album she draws on three languages—Italian, French, and German—as well as the Fribourg dialect to bring to life a variety of Swiss folk songs, a true treasure trove of beautiful melodies. Many of the songs included here were compiled from various folk songs by Joseph Bovet (1879–1951), a Swiss priest, composer, and lyricist. “Le Vieux Chalet” is the best-known piece among those written by Father Bové. Popular lute player Luca Pianca has arranged these pieces for string quartet, lute, guitar, and accordion, creating a simple yet rich sound that successfully brings out the songs’ charm. Please enjoy to your heart’s content the elegant voices, full of warmth and softness.
