Description:
“PaintingInSound,” Hayes Green’s third album on Sunnyside, expands our understanding of the possibilities of jazz, as well as binaural, spatial, and immersive music. Green, a highly acclaimed jazz musician, composer, and electronic sound artist, has created rich, resonant works grounded in decades of mastering traditional and improvisational techniques and exploring sound. Recorded using Max/MSP and SPAT spatial and binaural software, this work places the listener within a fully three-dimensional soundscape. Green treats space as an equal voice, shaping air, distance, proximity, and movement with the same care as melody, harmony, and rhythm. Through placement and movement within this immersive space, melodies trace arcs and spirals; instruments and sounds sparkle, orbit, recede, while timbres draw near and then dissolve. Rooted in the improvisational nature of jazz yet transcending traditional forms, this work expands the boundaries between performance and environment. It is a sweeping declaration by an artist who propels jazz into a new dimension of perception.
