Romantic Piano Concertos Volume 81: Piano Concertos by Rabbler and Bliss, 20th century England! The Romantic Piano Concerto Series (RPCS) is Hyperion's popular series of discoveries and revivals of unknown piano concertos of the Romantic era. Volume 81 is a collection of piano concertos by Edmund Labbra and Arthur Bliss, 20th century British composers who studied with or were influenced by Holst and Vaughan Williams, including the virtuosic piano concerto by Bliss premiered by Solomon at the 1939 New York World's Fair and the 1955 piano concerto by Labbra, commissioned by the BBC. Rabbler's graceful Piano Concerto, commissioned by the BBC in 1949 and reflecting the English pastoral tradition. Although the composition dates from the middle of the 20th century, the Romantic Piano Concerto series remains true to the spirit of the Romantic Piano Concerto series, and the refreshing little piece for piano and orchestra, "May in Sussex," composed by Arnold Bax for Princess Elizabeth's birthday in 1946, is a Coupling also adds to the charm of this album. Performers are the intelligent Australian pianist Piers Lehn, who also made an excellent combination on Ferdinand Ries' Piano Concerto Collection (CDA 68217), and the young American orchestra "The Orchestra Now (TON)," directed by Leon Botstein.
