The Bruckner 9th by Honeck & Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has long been highly acclaimed as a high sound quality label, and sound mirror, which has been responsible for recording not only the REFERENCE RECORDINGS but also PENTATONE, BIS, and many other labels with an established reputation for their recordings, has teamed up with sound mirror for the highly acclaimed "Pittsburgh Live! sound mirror, a company that has been in charge of recording for over 40 years, has teamed up to produce the highly popular "Pittsburgh Live! series. The ninth recording in the series is Bruckner's last unfinished work, Symphony No. 9. Bruckner began composing No. 9 in 1887, after the first draft of No. 8 was completed. However, after extensive revisions of No. 8, as well as the older symphonies No. 3 and No. 1, he again began work on No. 9 in 1891. By the end of 1894, when he had completed the third movement, Bruckner's strength had considerably diminished, and he died on October 11, 1896, without having completed the fourth movement. The third movement, Adagio, which he completed at the end, is breathtakingly beautiful, as Bruckner said it was the most beautiful slow movement he had ever composed.Honeck, who has performed with various conductors as a viola player with the Vienna Philharmonic, recalled his performance of Bruckner's Symphony No. 9 under Bernstein's baton: "Bernstein once gave a speech in which he asked, 'What do we artists have to do with economics, politics, and honor? In a speech Bernstein once gave, he asked, "What do we artists have to do with economics, politics, and honor? The diplomatic games of politicians, the trivial bickering of economists, they do not reveal the truth. After all, only the artist can harmonize the mystery and truth of things and continue to show the presence of God in people's hearts." I had heard that. When I was fortunate enough to perform this Bruckner 9th with Bernstein, the meaning of these words became clear to me." The commentary includes Horneck's own commentary on the music, which has become a specialty of the series. The commentary is as insightful and in-depth as his lucid playing. At the end of the commentary, Horneck quotes Max Auer, the author of Bruckner's biography: "From its richly constructed opening, Bruckner's swan song, the Ninth Symphony, seems to be surrounded by light shining through a cathedral.This is the feeling of being released from the burdens and fatigue of this life and being on the road to the afterlife." If you feel as Auer describes, it will truly be a wonderful departure." The performance is all about Honeck's meticulous interpretation and deep understanding of the music and his pursuit with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
