Description:

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Australia's premier orchestra, launches its own label! The first release will be Debussy and Strauss songs with orchestra and soprano. Founded in 1906, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) and its resident MSO Chorus perform to audiences of more than 5 million people each year in concerts, on television and in broadcast and online concerts on MSO LIVE, and in over 180 events in 56 countries. In 1965, the orchestra became the first Australian orchestra to tour abroad, and in 1970 made its Carnegie Hall debut for the first time. Through regular engagements in China, Indonesia, and Singapore, the orchestra has established a strong presence outside the country as well.2022 marks the arrival of the first independent label in partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO LIVE) and with the help of LSO LIVE's recording skills! For this memorable first release, the MSO and conductor Jaime Martin have chosen Debussy and R. Strauss Lieder with Australian soprano Siobhan Stagg, the MSO's 2023 Artist in Residence. Debussy's "Arrietta forgotten," based on a poem by Verlaine and composed mostly in 1886, evokes a time with the singer Marie, whom he met at the age of 18 and with whom he parted in the end, a love that has become a memory of the past. The orchestration was created by Australian composer Brett Dean for Kojenner and Rattle in 2015, and seems to add new subtext and color to Debussy's original piano accompaniment. The "Four Last Songs" from the last years of R. Strauss's life is like the last words of an 84-year-old man to his nearly 55-year marriage, which ended only with his death. These two opposing works are delicately portrayed by the colorful orchestration of the MSO led by Jaime and the angelic voice of Stagg.
