Born in 1936, Bobby Wayne is a cult hero of the rockabilly world who popularized rockabilly in the American Northwest with his bass-baritone voice, often compared to Johnny Cash’s. This album is a comprehensive collection of murder ballads and prison songs, most of which he wrote, composed, and recorded himself. It features a series of largely previously unreleased tracks—minimalist, raw prison songs depicting the murder of a lawyer, a gun-toting beauty, and life as a criminal—all imbued with his deep, resonant bass voice. While there are many artists with the same name, this is Bobby Wayne—born in Spokane, Washington, whose real name is Robert Wayne Snyder. He started playing guitar at age 15, formed the “Rocky Mountain Playboys” at 16, and—as a shy 17-year-old—was told by a Los Angeles club to “pack your bags and go back home,” yet he went on to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the greatest label executives, producers, and country musicians of the 20th century. Although he never had a major hit, his rockabilly raced through the dead of night, was recorded on reel-to-reel tape, and reaches us today as electrifying rock ’n’ roll.
