Shelly Manne

Description:

Recorded at the Black Hawk in San Francisco in September 1959 by Shelley Mann, a famous bebop drummer who also made his name as a drummer on soundtracks for Hollywood films of the 50's such as "Rampage" and "The Golden Arm" and worked with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. This is the first of four live recordings recorded at the Black Hawk in San Francisco in September 1959. Joe Gordon (trumpet), Richie Kamuca (tenor saxophone), Victor Feldman (piano), and Monty Budwig (bass) join him for six tracks. This album is recommended for straight-ahead jazz fans and opens with a slow take of Gershwin's "Summertime," followed by a dazzling rendition of the swinging waltz "Blue Daniel.
