The “Berlin Philharmonic Europe Concert,” held annually on May 1, began in 1991—the 200th anniversary of Mozart’s death—when it was performed under the baton of Abbado at Smetana Hall in Prague’s City Hall. This marks only the second time Prague has hosted the concert; the Estates Theater, chosen as the venue for 2006, is famous for hosting the 1787 premiere of *Don Giovanni*, conducted by Mozart himself. Since 2006 marked the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, just as with the first festival in 1991, the program consists entirely of Mozart works. Conductor Barenboim, who has appeared as a conductor in 1992 and 1997 and as a pianist in 1994 and 2004, is a regular at this concert—this marks his fifth appearance—and he is perfectly in sync with the Berlin Philharmonic. As is evident in the piano concertos he recorded with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1989—also performing as both pianist and conductor—his magnificent interplay with the orchestra is something unique to this master. Furthermore, the two symphonies—graced with an elegant and dazzling beauty—are flawlessly executed; it is particularly interesting to compare this recording of the “Haffner” Symphony with the one Abad recorded in 1991. And, above all, the Horn Concerto performed by Baborák—who served as the orchestra’s principal hornist at the time of the recording—is simply exquisite. You can fully savor, with both your eyes and ears, his astonishing artistry, which his teacher Baumann described as “a charming and mellow tone that transports the listener to an 18th-century festive mood.” King International
