On June 11, 2014, in Dresden—a city closely associated with Richard Strauss—Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Dresden held a gala concert to celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth. The concert featured three renowned sopranos known for their expertise in the works of Richard Strauss: Christine Gerke, Anya Hartelos, and Camilla Nylund. As is well known, Richard Strauss and the Staatskapelle Dresden share a deep connection. The opera *The Fire Peril (The City Without Fire)*, which was not permitted to be staged in Berlin for moral reasons, was a success in Dresden. Following this, the Dresden premiere of Oscar Wilde’s play *Salome* was also a resounding success, and Dresden went on to host the premieres of *Elektra* and *Der Rosenkavalier* one after another, cementing its reputation. As a result, 9 of R. Strauss’s 15 operas had their world premieres in Dresden. Building on this tradition, the operas featured in this concert are all works that premiered in Dresden. Thielemann is now unrivaled when it comes to conducting R. Strauss. He renders every detail of the full score with crystal-clear clarity and draws a rich, meticulously crafted sound from the Dresden orchestra. Furthermore, this video includes a documentary titled “My Strauss,” in which Thielemann discusses the composer. Thielemann, who grew up in Berlin, says he often listened to performances of Richard Strauss by Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. He also touches on the nine autograph scores of operas that premiered in Dresden, which he owns; these scores contain annotations by successive conductors such as Ernst von Schoof, Fritz Busch, Karl Böhm, and Otmar Suitner, and he reveals that he studies them meticulously. The documentary also includes rehearsal footage, allowing viewers to see Thielemann’s interpretation of Richard Strauss from various perspectives. King International
