Description:

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is at its best! The Chicago Symphony Orchestra's latest recording of works by contemporary American composers, conducted by Muti, features world premieres and first recordings of works by Montgomery, Mead Composer-in-Residence, and violist Raimi. The works by Montgomery, Mead Composer-in-Residence, and viola player Raimi are world premieres & first recordings commissioned by the Chicago Symphony; the work by Philip Glass, who entered the University of Chicago at age 15 and grew up with the Chicago Symphony under Rainer, is from 2017 and is Muti's first Glass work. All are super-perfect performances in which orchestral virtuosity is brought out in a way that Muti's magic tact could not have brought out any better. This is a remarkable disc. Jessie Montgomery is the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's 11th Composer-in-Residence for 2021. This is her first work since taking up her post. Montgomery says she was initially reluctant to write a work in response to a pandemic, but after a long hike one day, the hymn melody that would form the core of the work came to her. The melody is exchanged between the various orchestral choir groups, with the non-melody group providing the accompaniment, creating a magnificent orchestral meditation that explores a variety of tones and colors. The rich sound of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is brilliant. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has had a tradition since 1904 of having the orchestra perform works composed by viola players. Max Raimi joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1984, and Barenboim premiered Raimi's "Elegy" in 1989. This time, Raimi composed "The Story," "An Unanswered Question," and "Hope" from the Pulitzer Prize-winning poetry collection "Little Poems about a Hound and a Hare" by Lisel Müller. Elizabeth DeShon, a mezzo-soprano who has visited Japan for Seiji Ozawa Music School performances, sings in each movement, and principal clarinetist Stephen Williamson, principal bassoonist Keith Bunke, and principal double bassist Alex Hanna play a major role in each movement. The work is extremely dramatic.DeShon's voice is as good as a full orchestra, and above all, his orchestral skills are on full display. Philip Glass came to the University of Chicago in 1952 at the age of 15, when he was allowed to skip a grade. Here he became acquainted with the Cotton Club and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra of Fritz Reiner's era. He also listened to records with friends. There, he was greatly influenced by Mahler and Bruckner symphonies. His 11th symphony was composed in 2017 and premiered the same year. This is Muti's first attempt at a GRASS work, and his singing and orchestration are all outstanding. King International
