Franck (1822-1890) is generally known as "a French composer who wrote symphonies, violin sonatas, and organ music. However, how many people know that he was actually from Belgium and also composed operas? César Franck was born in Liège, Belgium, and quickly developed his musical talent. The following year, in 1835, his family moved to Paris, where he entered the Paris Conservatory in 1837. Since he worked almost exclusively in France from then on, Franck is known as a French composer, but Belgium holds him in very high regard. This work is said to have been written when he was 14 years old and premiered at the Paris Opera, but in fact only the singing part has survived. The orchestral part has been lost.The composer Luc van Hove added the orchestral part to this recording, which was performed at the reopening of the Royal Opera House Wallonia, which had been renovated over the past three years. The bloody story based on a real person is interesting, but it is also a valuable recording that shows what kind of music the young Franck was modeling for himself.
