Description:

The ALAY label is a newly launched label by Werner X. Uehlinger, owner of HAT HUT (EZZ-THETICS), and the CD is available in a limited one-press only. The sustained excellence heard throughout these two discs reveals the breadth and importance of Armstrong's brilliant talent in the relatively early years of his career. Here is an excerpt from the liner notes What were the elements that made the Hot Five (and later the Hot Seven) so special? First, intimacy. Although they were never a formal ensemble, their time together in King Oliver's and Jelly Roll Morton's bands, and the various ad hoc experiences the members had with each other, provided a relaxed, comfortable, and lively foundation for their blues-based songs, which was second nature to them. This was second nature to the group. They also had the opportunity to invent solo routines and "improvisational" arrangements, which they put to good use in the studio. And let's not forget their outstanding instrumental skills. Lil was a classically trained concert pianist (replaced by the incomparable Earl Hines on the last session in 1928 by a very different member), Kid Ory was one of the leading New Orleans-style trombonists of his generation, and clarinetist Johnny Dodds was highly sought after for his distinctive expressive tone and improvisational tactics. And then there was Armstrong. It is hard to measure now how much of an impact and influence Armstrong exerted at the time (in 1927 the Melrose Music Company arranged two books of his playing for musicians, "125 Jazz Breaks for Trumpet" and "50 Hot Choruses for Cornet"). Choruses for Cornet"). But the evidence throughout these performances is overwhelming. The flamboyance of his attack, the vibrancy and audacity of his phrasing, the melodic charm and expressive passion of his arias reimagined and breathed new life into the drama of popular song and blues.Above all, the inexpressible charisma that Armstrong radiates through his trumpet and voice resonates throughout these timeless works. Artistry and entertainment coexist. Miracles do indeed exist. (Art Lange)
