Description:
Hamburg was granted commercial privileges in the 12th century in recognition of its contribution to the Crusades. After many changes, by the 17th century, Hamburg was granted the privilege of being a "free city" by the Roman emperor, and gained autonomy. The Hamburg music director composed and performed brilliant music for the festive ceremonies at which a group captain was appointed each year. These are magnificent works depicting the contrast between "war and peace," with trumpet and timpani playing an active role. The Baroquewerke Hamburg, conducted by Ila Hofmann, performs the music.
