The second performance by the Joachim Raff Quartet, celebrating the bicentennial of the birth of Joachim Raff, a Swiss composer of the Middle Romantic period. He was highly regarded as Liszt's assistant in orchestration. He later became independent and left behind more than 200 works during his lifetime, including 11 symphonies, 8 string quartets, and concertos. However, despite being an excellent pianist, Raff himself rarely gave public concerts, was not good at self-promotion, and had a modest personal life. In his later years, he became director of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, where he taught younger musicians. To commemorate the bicentennial of Raff's birth, the Leipzig String Quartet has released the world premiere recordings of String Quartet No. 5 and No. 7, called "Schone Mullerin" (The Beautiful Water Mill Girl), following the first recording (MDG-30721872).
