Description:
A soul-jazz band formed in 1979 by students at the University of Oslo in Norway.
Centered around guitarist Kjell Larsen and bassist Geir Holmsen—who had already gained recognition as members of Ruphus, a band representative of 1970s Nordic progressive rock—the group was joined by drummer Bjorn Jenssen, and vocalist Sidsel Endresen—who would later become Norway’s most famous soul-jazz singer—to form the band.
Around 1982, guitarist Jon Eberson, who had already gained fame in the jazz world, joined the group. They added woodwinds (saxophone, trombone, and trumpet), brass, percussion, and three additional vocalists, expanding to a large ensemble of over 11 members and creating one of the most powerful band lineups in Norwegian music history.
In 1984, they released this album, *The Soul Survivors*. The album sold well and received consistently high praise from music critics of the time. In particular, “Just Another Love Song,” sung by Endresen, was a hit that would have fit right in on the radio—a soothing track with a laid-back rhythm and rich vocals that were easy on the ears, and it enjoyed great popularity at the time.
The contributions of each instrumental section were also superb: the guitars filled in the gaps between the songs with tones and playing reminiscent of fusion, while the brass section and vocal harmonies—reminiscent of ’80s disco-funk—lightheartedly embellished the tracks.
