Description:
Richard Strauss and Amy Beach's "Violin Sonatas" features the duo of Sibelius Academy graduate Eriikka Maalismaa on violin and Emil Holmstrom on piano. Following "Schumann's Violin Sonatas for Period Instruments" (ABCD 438), this second album is a program of "Violin Sonatas" by Richard Strauss and Amy Beach. The 19th century was a ridiculous time, to say the least. After a little too long in the Age of Enlightenment, with its pride in rationality and its many inhibitions, it was replaced by an overflowing romanticism that opened people's eyes. Not only is there a sense of propriety, but we have what is called emotion. As a result, music became unashamedly maximalist and lost its smarts. The orchestras became bloated, the works longer, and the conception swelled" (Michael Mattila) (ABCD 503 liner notes). Both Strauss and Beach were composers born in the 19th century and lived until the middle of the 20th century.Strauss's "Violin Sonata in E-flat major," "full of masculinity and playfulness," and the emotionally delicate "Violin Sonata in A minor" by Amy Beach, a woman from the ancient city of Boston. The program was created with an awareness of the "contrast" between Strauss' "hit" works and Beach's works, which "had been pushed to the wall for no good reason," and is performed on a Giuseppe Dallaglio violin and Bösendorfer piano.
