Producer Shokuhin Matsuri a.k.a. a.afoodman, originally from Furuya, has released his second album, HIKARIGASASHIKOMU, on the prestigious British label Hyperdub Nagoya-born electronic musician Shokuhin Matsuri, a.k.a. foodman, has released his latest album, HIKARIGASASHIKOMU, his second release on the prestigious UK label Hyperdub, following Yasuragiland! The phrase “HIKARIGASASHIKOMU” (literally, “light streaming in”), which serves as the album’s title, conveys a sense of hope amidst difficult circumstances. Opening up new creative possibilities for foodman, this album is both introspective and highly dynamic, expressing the clarity and light discovered after a period of self-exploration. While this is a deeply personal work, it also captures the sound of a mental state that has become nearly universal in modern times—one where thoughts continue to scatter as if 500 tabs were open simultaneously. This is not merely a personal psychological issue; it reflects a world where a lack of attention has become the very fabric of society’s media environment. In this work, the use of the voice is emphasized more than ever before, incorporating foodman’s own looped vocals. These vocals sing fragments of Japanese nursery rhymes and play songs, as well as thoughts that have surfaced in everyday life. Despite its cuteness and innocence, this soundscape violently bounces, fragments, and dissolves. foodman’s voice is repeated, deconstructed, and bounces around frenetically as its speed fluctuates. The sonic elements surround him, calling out to him, and responding to one another. The structure and vocal approach are influenced by genres such as footwork, ghetto house, and baile funk—all of which are abstracted to the extreme and transformed into fragments of swirling, psychedelic effects. Food Matsuri a.k.a. a.foodman’s latest release, HIKARIGASASHIKOMU, will be available not only as a standard imported LP but also as an LP with a Japanese obi strip (including a booklet).
