Description:
Tibor García, guitar prodigy, has completed an album dedicated to the legendary guitar composer Agustín Barrios, who has been called a guitar prodigy by many performers. In this album, he pays homage to the Paraguayan guitarist and composer Agustín Barrios-Mangoré (1885-1944). Among his most famous compositions for the instrument (he wrote about 300 pieces) is the triplet "Cathedral," which appeared on Thibaut Garcia's second album for Erato, Bach Inspirations. Gramophone magazine praised the Toulouse-born guitarist's "flowing, plaintive interpretation," with "a convincing tension between the rippling enunciation of the lilting paragraphs and the steeper thrust of the more dramatic passages." As Tibor Garcia explains, Barrios is an essential composer in the guitarist's repertoire, and his music is a deft mix of South American popular music and the romanticism of Chopin and Schumann, composers he reveres. In addition to 16 varied pieces by Barrios himself, the album includes transcriptions of three well-known pieces originally written for piano: Chopin's "24 Preludes Op.28 - No.20," Schumann's "Troimelai" from "Children's Scenes," and the opening movement from Beethoven's "Sonata in Moonlight. The album also includes transcriptions of famous pieces originally written for piano. In addition to Barrios' music, the album includes readings of two of his poems by Paraguayan musician and poet Orlando Rojas. In the first poem, which gives the album its name, Barrios portrays himself as a wandering troubadour; in the second, Barrios pays homage by performing in tribal dress and using the name Nitsuga Mangole, evoking the indigenous Guarani people of Parakei. (Nitsuga is Agustin written backwards, and Mangole is the name of a Guarani chief, and the Guarani language is still widely spoken in Paraguay.)Thibaut Garcia said, "Barrios is a unique composer whose music is inspired by the nature of Paraguay, the flora and fauna of the jungle, and the very soul of the guitar, and I want to share his work with you today."
