Immediately after the band’s breakup, he embarked on a musical journey across the African continent, with the recording process even captured on film. His consistent pursuit of “music as percussion” under his solo name continues to exert a profound influence across various fields as a pioneer bridging world music and pop. This landmark first studio solo album, released in 1985, defined his career. Preceding Paul Simon’s masterpiece *Graceland*, it was a groundbreaking work that blended indigenous African rhythms with modern production. In the dawn of sampling technology, it created a collision between local vocals and sharp drumming, establishing itself as a monumental, ahead-of-its-time post-modern pop masterpiece. The album features 10 tracks, including the anthem "KOTEJA (OHBOLILLA)" with Raylema’s powerful vocals, "GONGROCK" with a crawling groove that shakes the air, and "SERENGETILONGWALK," which evokes the winds of the savanna. The dynamism of the percussion, made all the more striking by the stripping away of ornamentation, still radiates a fresh brilliance even after 40 years, drawing the listener into an unknown sonic space.
