Ysaÿe’s Sonatas for Solo Violin, recorded at home during lockdown! Hailed as “one of the most perfect violinists on the planet” (The Daily Telegraph, UK) and receiving overwhelming acclaim, Canadian virtuoso violinist James Aenes won the “Best Instrumental Performance” at the 61st Grammy Awards in 2019 for Aaron Jay Carnis’s Violin Concerto (ONYX4189). In March 2020, amid the COVID-19 lockdown, Eanes launched his own online concert series titled “Recitals from Home,” in which he released six unaccompanied violin works by Bach and Ysaÿe in sequence. While Enes has a renowned recording of Bach’s unaccompanied violin sonatas and partitas more than 20 years ago (AN28772-3); however, this marks his first-ever recording of Ysaÿe’s unaccompanied violin sonatas, resulting in this complete recording of Op. 27, comprising Sonatas Nos. 1 through 6. Enes, who as recently as March had absolutely no recording equipment or expertise at home, gathered the necessary gear with the help of recording professionals and friends from around the world. He transformed his living room into a recording studio for this project, and the resulting sound quality is astonishingly high—exceeding all expectations. To minimize noise, the recording took place early in the morning.
