Two people in love… Florville and Sofia. But they cannot get married. That’s because Florville’s father and Sofia’s guardian, Gaudenzio, can’t stand each other. It’s a given that they’ll oppose the marriage. However, when Florville’s father passes away, the two begin to hope, “Maybe we can get married after all.” But Gaudenzio quickly arranges a marriage for Sofia—to Mr. Bruschino’s son. However, Gaudenzio doesn’t know what Mr. Bruschino’s son looks like. What’s more, he actually doesn’t know what Florville looks like either… It looks like we’re in for a story full of twists and turns. So, will the story unfold just as you expect? Composed in 1812 by the 20-year-old Rossini, *Il signor Bruschino* belongs to the genre of “opera farsa” (comic opera), which he was exploring at the time. The story is packed into a compact, one-act format with a brisk pace, but for some reason, this work was staged only once before being shelved. It even suffered the misfortune of having its autograph score go missing (though that score would eventually return to Rossini 45 years later). Now, this 2012 production in Pesaro transplants the story to a modern-day theme park. On a stage surrounded by popcorn stands and balloons, characters dressed in colorful, kitschy costumes move about humorously. Even the dog that appears is comical. Of course, the plot is intricately intertwined, and if you take your eyes off it for even a moment, you’ll lose track of what’s going on—but the music is consistently lighthearted, and you’ll find yourself completely captivated by it. The vivid conducting by the young conductor Rustioni, born in 1983, is also superb. Please enjoy this wonderful experience. Naxos Japan
