Description:
NAXOS' complete Brahms Lieder series. While the second and third collections were collections of folk songs, the fourth collection focuses on songs for solo voice written when he was in his twenties. Op. 6, which includes the "Spanish Song" in the rhythm of Bolero, was written around the age of 20, while Op. 14 is a collection of songs said to have been inspired by an encounter with Agathe von Siebold, who became his lover. Both collections are based on folk songs that fascinated Brahms at the time, and are simple in style but full of the melodic beauty that is typical of Brahms. The title of Op. 19 is not "Song (Gesange, Lieder, Romanze, etc.)" but "Poem (Gedichte)". In each piece, the piano part also plays an important role. The "Seven Songs" Op. 48 was written over a period of about 10 years, and is a collection of songs with many highlights, such as "To the One I Love," which shows the influence of Swiss folk songs, "Change of Heart," which is reminiscent of a chorale, and "Consolation in Tears," which alternates rapidly between major and minor keys, reminiscent of Schubert.Performed by tenor Karel, who studied with Christoph Pregardien, and soprano Wunderlin, who is active in both opera and concert.
