Description:

Moravian composer Paul (Pavel) Vranitsky, who moved to Vienna at the age of 20 and became an important composer in the Viennese musical world, associating with Haydn and Mozart, became a favorite of Maria Theresa, wife of Emperor Franz II, who often asked him to compose festive music for the court and for stage performances. She often asked him to compose music for court ceremonies and stage productions. The few surviving scores of his stage music have the title "Sinfonia" on the front cover, which seems to imply that it was just as important to him as his major work, the symphonies. It includes overtures and marches for each act, and in fact, he later wrote a symphony from them. The works on the album here were all premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna. The Spaniard of Peru, or The Death of Lola, premiered on June 13, 1795, and is based on the bloody conquest of the Inca Empire by Francisco Pizarro in 1532. The overtures in acts 3 and 5 are omitted from this recording, as they were later converted to symphonic works. Iolanta, Queen of Jerusalem was first performed on April 17, 1797.Set in Jerusalem in 1135, it is a tale of intrigue, with suitors opposing a young queen, attacking Muslim armies, and the election of a new leader of the Knights Templar. Ahmet and Zenid was first performed on October 28, 1796. The orchestra is composed of piccolo, triangle, cymbals, and bass drum, which are characteristic of the music of the Ottoman infantry corps "Jenicheli. As in the previous five works, the Czech Chamber Orchestra Pardovice, conducted by Marek Stilets, gives a superb performance. Naxos Japan
