He studied conducting at the Juilliard School with Jean-Paul Morel and has served as principal conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra, music director of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, music director of the Washington National Symphony Orchestra, principal conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. In 2001, he became the first American conductor to conduct the Last Night of the BBC Proms. As a guest conductor, he has performed with orchestras around the world. He is a six-time Grammy Award winner and has been nominated for 35 Grammy Awards.
