Ardeo Quartet

Description:

The Aldeo Quartet, consisting of four female members, including Misa Ryō and Yuko Hara. Their highly anticipated new album is a collection of works centered on George Crumb’s *Black Angels*, titled *XIII (Thirteen)*. Formed in 2001 at the Paris Conservatoire, the Aldeo Quartet is an ensemble consisting of four female members—including violinist Misa Yang, a familiar face at the La Folle Journée music festival, and the accomplished violist Yuko Hara—and is active both in France and abroad. “Ardeo” means “I burn” in Latin, a phrase that perfectly captures the very attitude with which these four female musicians approach their music. In recent years, they have also earned high praise for their recording of the string quartet version of the “Goldberg Variations.” Their highly anticipated new recording on the KLARTHE label is an ambitious collection of works centered on the number “XIII (thirteen).” Centered on *Black Angels: 13 Images from the Underworld* by American contemporary composer George Crumb (1929–), the album also features “Sonnet No. 164” from Monteverdi’s *Canzoniere* of Petrarch (the opening of No. 13 from Book 8 of the “Madrigals of War and Love”), Schubert’s String Quartet No. 13 “Rosamunde,” Purcell’s Pavane and Chaconne, and a string quartet arrangement of Schubert’s art songs. Composed in 1970 during the Vietnam War, Crumb’s *Black Angels* is a work consisting of 13 pieces divided into three major sections: “Departure,” “Absence,” and “Return.” The entire work is structured like a round-trip journey exploring a “world of darkness,” and Kram himself has described it as “an allegory representing the chaotic modern world.” This is a noteworthy recording in which the Aldeo Quartet takes on this challenging yet magnificent work head-on. The Japanese edition (KKC6297) includes a Japanese-language booklet by Bernard Fournier—known as the author of the French Fayard publications *The Beauty of the String Quartet* and *The History of the String Quartet* (translated by Yuko Hara of the Aldeo Quartet). We have also included a diagram illustrating the structure of Kram’s *Black Angels*. King International
