In memory of Sjöggerstam, this box contains all of his Sibelius recordings for ONDINE, including a collection of Scandinavian music pieces!
Sjöggerstam was a composer who wrote more than 300 symphonies, and a conductor who was also very active as a conductor. He was well-loved in Japan for his impressive Santa Claus-like appearance, with his broad physique and rich white beard. The works of his native composer Sibelius were important to him, and he recorded the complete symphonies twice with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra (1990-92, CHANDOS) and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra (2002-04, ONDINE). This box collects the Sibelius albums he recorded for ONDINE, including his second complete symphony cycle. In addition, this special edition includes albums by Kula and Krami, Sibelius' junior composers, and a collection of orchestral pieces from Finland and Scandinavia.
Sibelius' symphonies conducted by Segerstam are characterized by their large scale and eloquence, but also by their sensitive and warm interpretation. The music is more tightened without changing the size of the stance.The Violin Concerto features a fresh solo by Pekka Kuusisto, the first Finn to win the Sibelius Competition in 1995.
Segerstam was also a master of dramatic music and small pieces. The last two discs in the box set showcase his ability to carefully depict the character of a piece and convey the emotion and drama of the composer in every detail. Scandinavian music is often thought of as simple and unadorned. But Sjöggerstam's symphonic and colorful performance gives the listener a great sense of fulfillment.
