Description:
Baroque solo singing with a close-knit chamber ensemble. British soprano Rowan Pearce, who has performed extensively in the Baroque and German Lieder repertoire, will perform with the Floridium, an ancient instrumental ensemble at the forefront of Baroque music in the United Kingdom, in a program of hidden solo repertoire by some of the most famous composers of the late Baroque era. The Floridium will be joined by Reiko Ichise on viola da gamba. The sound design clearly reveals the movements of each part, bringing out the subtleties of each work, and reminding us how closely Baroque composers wove the patterns of their sounds together. Handel's solo cantata "In Flames" is one of the works that the young composer performed to the delight of the music-loving aristocracy while opera was forbidden in Rome by papal decree. Bach's secular cantata BWV 204 was written around 1726-27, when many cantatas for solo voices were written, and is an impressive work with arias in which the flauto traverso (baroque flute) solo plays a prominent role.The same Traverso's lively interplay with the violin in Vivaldi's Chamber Concerto and Handel's Concerto for Ensemble, as well as the skillful expression of the timbres of each instrument, are also fascinating. The album is full of highlights, including "Alleluia" at the end of the album, where Pierce's beautiful voice shines amidst the violent ups and downs of the sound. Naxos Japan
