Gustav Adolph Kerker is known for his musical "The Upper Class" (777509). Born in Germany, he immigrated to the United States with his family when he was 10 years old. His opera "The Beauty of New York," composed in 1897, is one of his best-known works and tells the story of Violet, a young girl in the Salvation Army who, at great cost, converts the hypocritical and profligate old man Ichabod and finds true love. Although the play's Broadway premiere was not well received, it was a smash hit in London in 1898, where it ran for 700 performances and was so enthusiastically received that it became the model for subsequent musical comedies around the world.
