Description:

Geminiani's hit recording of the Trio Sonata version of the Violin Sonatas, Op. 1, arranged by the composer himself, is now available! Francesco Geminiani was a Baroque violinist and composer who was born in Italy and moved to England. His Op. 1 attracted great attention when it was published in 1716, and arrangements by Barsanti, Avison, and Luhmann also appeared. Geminiani later published a revised edition in 1739 with many changes, followed by a trio sonata edition in 1757, in which the two violin parts were overlaid and paraphrased from the original melody, or composed entirely new, and the "Violin A fourth part was added when the violin part was played by more than one player," that is, a bass part for the ripieno. This suggests that the trio sonata version was intended to be performed as an ensemble concerto, taking advantage of the contrasting effects of the concertino and lipieno. The author of the original commentary imagines that this was a challenge by the 70-year-old Geminiani to surpass the arrangements by third parties.Seven of the nine pieces on this disc use scores (published in 2020) revised by Rudolf Larsch, the chief editor of the complete Geminiani works. Only No. 5 is performed as a trio sonata with one part and no lipieno part, while Nos. 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 11 are performed as ensemble concertos with an increased number of players. In addition, in some pieces, Geminiani added woodwinds to accommodate the tastes of London, where he was active at the time, and other innovations not found in the score. The Avison editions of No. 4 and No. 7 are also carefully recorded to show the difference in orchestration from Geminiani's. The members of the orchestra are Asabuki Sonata, K. Asabuki, A. Asabuki, K. Asabuki, M. Asabuki and K. Asabuki. The orchestra is made up of Japanese musicians active in Switzerland, including Sonoko Asabuki (violin, viola), Shuko Sugama (violone), Keiko Kinoshita (flute), and Miho Fukui (bassoon). Naxos Japan
