Paavo Järvi, Estonian Festival Orchestra

Description:

The fourth release on the ALPHA label by Paavo Järvi and the Estonian Festival Orchestra. It features a suite and music for strings from "Klatt," a major work by Tuvin, the great composer of their native Estonia, and two pieces from Poland, a neighbor of the Baltic states. Kratt" is based on the myth of the Estonian kratt (goblin), which was conceived after Tubin was encouraged to study folk songs by Kodály, whom he met in Budapest, and was written with reference to the methods of Stravinsky and Bartók. It was premiered in 1943 in Nazi-occupied Estonia, and in 1961, a suite was compiled. It is a very pleasing work, employing a variety of orchestral techniques. The neoclassical "Music for Strings" offers the essence of Tuvin's various techniques. Bacewicz's "Concerto for Strings" is inspired by Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra" and sublimates elements of the Baroque concerto style and Polish folk dances.Lutoslawski's "Funeral Music" is one of his masterpieces, inspired by and dedicated to the memory of Bartók's "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta," and develops a unique interpretation of the twelve-tone technique. Järvi and the Estonian National Festival Orchestra give a delightful performance that more than conveys the charm of the work, with a deep empathy for each work and edgy playing. Naxos Japan
