Haitink's sixth "Night Song," now available for the first time in the 21st century! Haitink conducted the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra for the first time in 1958. Since then, the two orchestras have worked together for more than 60 years. The Bavarian Radio archives have now unearthed a live recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 7 "Night Song" from February 2011. Haitink, who excelled at Mahler, made three recordings of this piece with the Concertgebouw Orchestra (1969, 1982, and 1985) and one recording with the Berlin Philharmonic (both in 1992), but this is the first time a performance from the 21st century has been made available to the world. Haitink was almost 82 years old at the time of this performance, and the playing time is almost the same as the Berliner Philharmoniker's recording from about 20 years earlier. There is no extreme deformation, and the performance is well-balanced, as is typical of Haitink, who never relaxed in his old age.
