Description:

New recording of "Orfeo" by Savard is now available on CD, featuring Marc Moynihan and a host of other talented performers! In 2021, Jordi Savard conducted a re-recording of "Orfeo" in a joint production between the Opéra Comique de Paris and the Royal Opera House of Versailles. Following the earlier release of the film recorded at the Opéra-Comique, here is a CD of the session recording made in Versailles. The 17th century music of the Mediterranean countries is of course Savard's own medicine cabinet, and "Orfeo" was also recorded in 2002 (video and CD), but this new recording features Marc Moyon, a very talented old music singer, as the main character Orfeo! His overwhelming "voice performance" is just like that of Orpheus, the legendary lyre poet who moved animals, plants, and trees. The other singers include Julio Zanazi, who played the main role in the old version, Sara Mingardo, who is back in the same role, Marianne-Beate Quirant, Luciana Mancini, and other notable singers, as well as shepherds and spirits, all of whom have a strong presence. In addition to veteran bass players such as Andrew Lawrence-King on the baroque harp and Pedro Esteban on percussion, the orchestra also includes such soloists as Pierre Amon on recorder and Jean-Pierre Kaniak on woodwind cornet, both of whom have built up a trustworthy relationship over many years. The soloist-level talents of Pierre Amon on recorder and Jean-Pierre Kaniak on woodwind cornet also show off their virtuosity in various places. The interpretation, carefully recorded at the Palace of Versailles, the perfect "venue" for old music theater, is so convincing that it raises questions about the very nature of music theater, making this a new definitive recording that is deeply worth listening to, even for Baroque music fans.
