Description:

Known as "Bernstein's Concertmaster," David Naydian's father was a featherweight boxer, but he had a passion for classical music and taught himself to play the violin. He made his recital debut at age 14, performing with the New York Philharmonic for the first time, and continued his studies with Adolph Busch and Ivan Galamian. In 1944, he was drafted into the Army Infantry and nearly sent to the European front, but a Philadelphia Orchestra principal bassoonist noticed Nadien and offered him a position as concertmaster of the military band, and after the war he became a soloist. When John Corigliano, the long-time concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, retired in 1965 and an open call was made for his successor, Nadien was unanimously selected by audition, beating out a field of distinguished applicants from all over the United States.Bernstein praised him highly during the audition and placed his trust in him. The year after Bernstein retired as Music Director, Nadien also left the New York Philharmonic, but it is said that he left a strong impression as "the face of the New York Philharmonic" despite his short tenure of only four seasons. As a soloist, Nadien performed concertos under the baton of George Szell, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, and Seiji Ozawa, but he was also in demand in the recording studio, performing with Bill Evans (Symbiosis), Billy Joel (52nd Street), and Sinead O'Connor (The New York Philharmonic), He has been the concertmaster on albums by Bill Evans (Symbiosis), Billy Joel (52nd Street), and Sinead O'Connor (Am I Not Your Girl?), and has participated in recordings by many top artists. He also played violin on Ryuichi Sakamoto's albums (Heatbeat and 1996). This CD is Naydian's debut album plus the previously unreleased Schubert. His superb technique, neat modeling, rich vibrato, and bright tone convey what he was like at the time. The debut album of French and Belgian music was first released on Monitor-MC 2017 (mono), and is reissued from a stereo version of the same content (Monitor-MCS 2017) that came out two years later. The two Schubert recordings are reissued from a test pressing (mono) that was left to a related party and is the first general release. Naxos Japan
