Description:

Hans Vollenweider (1918-1993), considered one of Switzerland's finest organists, began playing the piano at the age of nine and became a pupil of Zurich organist Victor Schlatter at the age of 15. In 1961 he taught at the University of Michigan, and in 1970 he succeeded his teacher Victor Schlatter as organist at Grossmunster. In 1961, he was appointed organist of the Grossmünster, where he continued to enchant audiences with his brilliant performances until 1986. Vollenweider was especially well known for his improvisations, which were passed on to his son, the popular harpist Andreas Vollenweider. The music on this album is performed on a large organ built in 1960 by Metzler, an organ workshop near Zurich. When it was completed, organists reportedly wanted to play it.As organist of the Grossmünster since 1970, Vollenweider spent several years recording all of J.S. Bach's organ works. This "Preludes and Fugues" offers Follenweider's dynamic and brilliant playing. Naxos Japan
