Description:

Satko, a guthrie-playing singer, lives in the medieval Russian city of Novgorod. When Satko sings of his ambitions at a banquet given by the guild of the city's wealthy merchants, he is regarded as a mountaineer who insults the guild and is banished. As Satoko wanders along the shores of the lake, Volhova, the daughter of the King of the Sea, who is enchanted by his singing, appears and tells him that he is destined to be united with a mortal and that if he accepts, she will give him a secret (a magical golden fish) that will grant him great riches. Satoko returns to the city after learning this secret and sets off for the great sea in search of riches... "Satoko" is a richly orchestrated production of Russian folk songs and traditional music based on the script "The Legend of Satoko," an oral epic poem (builina) that has been handed down in Russia since the Middle Ages. This work is considered one of Rimsky=Korsakov's masterpieces. Dmitry Cherniakov, a prodigy who has attracted a great deal of attention in the opera scene around the world, is in charge of the production at the Bolshoi Theatre in his native Moscow. He breathes new life into this dreamlike work, which moves back and forth between the present and the past, fantasy and reality. The title role is sung by a young tenor from Uzbekistan, Nadimidin Mavlyanov, who is active mainly at the Bolshoi Theater, and popular Russian soprano Aida Galifullina as Volkhova, daughter of the Sea King. Timur Zangiev, a young and up-and-coming conductor born in 1994, under the baton of the famous conductor, has successfully completed this magnificent work. Naxos Japan
