Description:
The French keyboardist Yoann Moulin, a member of the post-Frescobaldi generation of northerners who longed for a southern country, has brought a sincere and fresh interpretation of German music to the Ricercar label with his solo album (RIC394, domestic edition NYCX-10026), which highlights Scheidemann and Scheidt. In this album, he further impresses us with his deep attachment to and aptitude for 17th century German music, and he sheds light on the great composers who made their mark mainly in the world of organ music in Northern Germany. The program offers a detailed interpretation of their contributions to "keyboard music without foot keys," that is, music that can be played not only on the organ but also on the harpsichord. Stylus Luxurians" is a concept unique to 17th century German music, which can be compared to the Second Style, a style pursued by Monteverdi and other Italian composers of the same period in their vocal music, and which was called Stylus gravis. Stylus gravis is a Baroque instrumental style that incorporates a wealth of dissonant and ornamental forms, which is distinct from the strict polyphony that has existed since the Renaissance. The works here are mainly by Matthias Weckmann, who was active in Hamburg, a major center of organ art, as well as by his friend Froberger, who traveled all over Europe and learned various compositional techniques; Tunder, who was active at the Church of Our Lady of Lübeck as Buxtehude's predecessor; Scheidemann, one of Weckmann's teachers and also a major figure in Hamburg; and Ritter, who later became based in Hamburg. The works of other important figures in Hamburg, such as Scheidemann, who was one of Weckmann's teachers and a major figure in Hamburg, and Ritter, who was based in Hamburg after Weckmann. The Renaissance style is gradually colored with dramatic language, and eventually music like Bach's Toccata for harpsichord is derived, one note by note with the beautiful sound of the 17th century Flemish model harpsichord, reproduced with great skill by master craftsman Philippe Jumeau. The beauty of the careful spinning of the music with ...... is breathtaking. Naxos Japan
