The "Lollipop" of the title refers to "lollipop candy," and the Roclian Ensemble, formed in 1991, has a wide repertoire, focusing on introducing contemporary music and works by women composers. Its concerts always featured a few encores from lighter music, such as the one recorded here, which became their trademark. Joplin's "Ragtime," Gershwin's "Summertime," "My Love is Here," and "My Funny Valentine," a well-known jazz standard, are musical lollipops to be heard after listening to a serious classical work. The term "lollipop" is said to have been coined by the famous British conductor Sir Thomas Beecham, who chose syrupy, melodramatic, soothing tunes to calm the high emotions of the audience after a concert.
