An open and unpretentious gaze illuminates uncharted territory in the score—a new masterful performance that conveys the essence of Beethoven BIJINCLASSICAL’s fifth release is Irina Mezhueva’s monumental “Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas.” Recorded in a single session at the Shinkawa Cultural Hall in Uozu City, Toyama Prefecture, from June to July 2020—a time when the world was gripped by a sense of stagnation due to the COVID-19 pandemic—this collection of all 32 sonatas marks Mezhyueva’s second complete recording of the cycle. More than a decade has passed since her first complete set (recorded from 2007 to 2009), which received high acclaim from various quarters—including being honored as a “Record Art Special Selection”—and Mezhyueva has achieved an even more astonishing depth of artistry. While retaining her straightforward, introspective, and spiritually rich interpretations, her delicate touch that produces a diverse and rich timbre, and her majestic sense of scale, her pianism—now enhanced by boldness and improvisational flair—is truly unrivaled. The way intense energy bursts forth from within her substantial and solid musical structure is sure to leave listeners in awe, thinking, “This is truly Beethoven.” It is a collection of miraculous masterful performances in which, despite containing nothing novel, everything sounds fresh and thought-provoking. The instrument used is a vintage Steinway (made in New York) from 1922. We present this masterful performance, which conveys the very essence of Beethoven, in a natural, single-point recording.
