Masayoshi Fujita has completed a work that can be described as the culmination of his career to date—a new form that features not only the vibraphone but also the marimba, while incorporating elements of electronic dub that he has previously expressed under the name El Fog. Arranged with perfect balance, this album allows ample time to savor each sound and phrase at a leisurely pace until they sink deep into your heart. It evokes commonalities with great artists such as Midori Takada’s minimalism, Mika Vainio’s static atmosphere, ToRococoRot’s organic elements, and MinotaurShock’s pastoral electronics. But that’s not all: she has evaporated elements of contemporary music, classical and ambient sounds, deconstructed dub sounds, controlled noise, and fragments of jazz into a static mist in the atmosphere, skillfully transforming them into a new musical form to create a unique soundscape. “Since the marimba is played similarly to the vibraphone, it’s easy to pick up and get started with, but the resonance is completely different. Because marimba mallets are made of wood, the marimba has a wider range than the vibraphone, offering a vast sound palette with even more possibilities. I play it using a bow or mallets, and sometimes apply effects.” Masayoshi Fujita The lead single “Thunder,” with its light, airy resonance and warm, compassionate feel, is a song inspired by Anna Akhmatova’s poem “You Will Hear Thunder.”
