2014 Lucerne Festival Opening Concert VideoNelson All Brahms, the substitute for Abbado, takes on the challenge! 2014 is the first Lucerne Festival without Abbado. After a long history of featuring Mahler, Abbado was planning to start working on Brahms in 2014. Andris Nelsons took over for Abbado following his passing. Nelsons appeared in the opening concert included in this video and a total of four performances with Pollini on August 23&24. Nelsons has been working intensively on Brahms' works in recent years, making him a perfect choice. Nelsons is one of the busiest young conductors in the world today, and he has been active in all aspects of his career, conducting "Lohengrin" at the Bayreuth Festival and Britten's "War Requiem" at the Proms. The opening concert was an all-Brahms program.The piece is a direct continuation of the piece that Abbado was originally scheduled to play. The Serenade No. 2 is a five-movement work for string ensemble (viola, cello, and contrabass) without a violin, so the woodwinds and lower-middle range instruments sounded warm and gentle. Nelsons' gentle musicality works well in this performance. Next is the Alto Rhapsody sung by Sara Mingardo, who was trusted by Abbado. This piece was written for alto solo, male chorus, and orchestra. The lyrics are from Goethe's "Journey to the Winter Harz. It is said to have been influenced by the marriage of Clara Schumann's daughter Urie. Mingardo's deep voice sound is quite beautiful in this performance. And the main piece is Symphony No. 2.On the 23rd and 24th, when Nelsons performed Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 1 with Pollini, he wielded Symphony No. 3 as the second half of the program. Nelsons' Brahms has a deep gravitas and rich romanticism that speaks lyrically and eloquently at a slower tempo. Nelsons' dynamic conducting style also creates an overwhelming sense of exuberance.
