A Restored Passage: Bartók’s *The Miraculous Mandarin* for Piano Duo The world’s first recording of *The Miraculous Mandarin*—arranged for piano duo by the composer himself—was made by Kocsis & Hauser (1988; now out of print), and is well known for emphasizing the piece’s sharp, savage character. Performed in Berlin and Munich in March 2006 to mark the opening of the “Year of Hungarian Culture in Germany,” the performance by Hernádi & Mocsári and other Hungarian musicians, performed in Berlin and Munich to mark the opening of the “Year of Hungarian Culture in Germany” in March 2006. Their performance was based on the revised score published in 2000 under the supervision of Bartók’s son, Peter Bartók, and a key feature was the restoration of a passage spanning a total of 30 measures.
