World premiere recording of the important work "Lab.Oratorium" by Philippe Manulli, one of the leading contemporary French composers, who is also fresh in our minds as a jury member of the "Toru Takemitsu Composition Prize" 2019. Written for the Cologne Gürzenich Orchestra in collaboration with director Nicolas Shtemann, the work is a large-scale exploration of musical space that requires more than 250 performers, mobilizing actors, chorus, orchestra, and electronics. It is the culmination and conclusion of the "Cologne Trilogy," a series of independent musical worlds and a culmination of the spatial arrangement that has been pursued since "In Situ" (2013) and "Ring" (2016), also performed by Lotto and the Cologne Gürzenich Orchestra. A work on the contemporary refugee crisis, it is a musical response to the catastrophe in the Mediterranean Sea that has caused so many deaths, creating a new acoustic space with a powerful expression that is heartbreaking but never sentimental.
