Description:

Walton's beautiful melodies on a massive scale are intoxicating Respighi Petrova caught the world's attention when she won the Carl Nielsen Competition in 2016. This latest disc is the first in the [Momentum (momentum, propulsion, momentum)] series. It features Walton's concerto and Respighi's sonata. Walton's concerto was composed in 1938, while Korngold's, included in the sequel, was composed in 1945, a turbulent time, and both were premiered by Heifetz. Both Walton's and Respighi's sonatas have one thing in common: they are both in B minor, and Walton's work includes an Italian-inspired movement. Walton's Violin Concerto opens with a beautifully lyrical violin and an orchestral ensemble with beautifully shimmering harmonies. The second movement, "Alla Napolitana," is a superb tarantella-like movement. The colorful and lively vivace of the last movement is also a treat to listen to as the violins and orchestra engage in a back-and-forth exchange.Respighi's sonata is very operatic, with the piano playing like a full orchestra and the violin playing the melody as if it were singing a song with some actual lyrics. Riya Petrova was born into a Bulgarian musical family and studied with Augustin Dumay at the Queen Elisabeth Conservatory in Brussels, Antje Weidhaas at the Hans Eisler University of Music in Berlin, and Renaud Capuçon at the Conservatory in Lausanne. In 2016, he won the Carl Nielsen International Competition, which brought him to the attention of the world, and in 2022 he founded the Festival de Musique de Nimes with his friends Alexandre Kantorov and Aurélien Pascal, of which he is the joint producer. The instrument he plays is the "Helios" made in Cremona in 1735 by Carlo Bergonzi, a pupil of Stradivari, and loaned to him by a private sponsor. King International
