Isabelle Faust's new release turns to Brahms Warm, expansive singing lines, with Melnikov's understated, burnished pianism as the perfect foil Isabelle Faust's remarkable run continues. Her next release brings Brahms and Schumann in partnership with her equally impressive long-standing colleague Alexander Melnikov. This Brahms and Schumann programme (together with the F.A.E. Sonata) was also given in Japan in June 2014, where it attracted a great deal of attention. Faust and Melnikov had already recorded Brahms's Violin Sonata No. 1 (HMC 901981, now deleted; the same Bösendorfer was used on that occasion), so this release completes their traversal of the Brahms violin sonatas. From the opening of the Third, Faust's broadly arching lines meet an ideally responsive partner in Melnikov, and the ensemble is of the highest order. The Bösendorfer Melnikov plays ranges in colour from a dark, burnished quality to something genuinely radiant, with a dynamic span so wide that there are moments when it sounds more dramatic than a modern instrument. << About the F.A.E. Sonata >> The F.A.E. Sonata was written in 1853 as a collaborative work by three musicians for the great violinist of the day, Joseph Joachim. The three were Brahms, Schumann and Albert Dietrich (1829-1908). Dietrich had moved to Düsseldorf in 1851, where he was welcomed into the circle around Schumann and became a close friend of Brahms. Active as a conductor, he enjoyed a reputation in his lifetime as the composer who would carry on Schumann's legacy. F.A.E. stands for Joachim's personal motto, "Frei aber einsam" (free but lonely), and the sonata is built on those three notes. The first movement, an Allegro, is by Dietrich; the second, an Intermezzo, by Schumann; the third, a Scherzo, by Brahms; and the fourth, the Finale, again by Schumann.
