Chavez / Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional De Mexico

Description:

Historic self-recordings by Carlos Chavez, one of the most important composers in Mexican music history, all recorded for RCA and Columbia from 1938-1973, vividly revived with the latest remastering! The complete symphonies and the violin concerto with Schelling are also back! Carlos Chavez was born near Mexico City in 1899 and began composing at the age of nine. Exposed to the rich culture of Mexico's indigenous peoples as a child, he fully absorbed its essence, which became an essential part of his compositional style in later years. after the long and violent revolution of the 1920s, Chavez became the first composer to create a nationalistic musical language inspired by the Aztecs. His work was comparable to that of his American contemporary, Aaron Copland, who reflected his country's traditions in music in a style that was not bound by European classical musical currents. Chavez was also known as a talented conductor, and in 1928 he founded the Orquesta Sinfonica de México, which he conducted for 20 years. In addition to the major orchestras of his own country, Chavez has conducted major orchestras around the world, including a guest appearance with the NBC Symphony Orchestra at the invitation of Toscanini. Chavez has made numerous recordings of his own music and that of other composers. One of the earliest is an SP recording of his first two symphonies, Antigona and Indio, and an orchestration of Buxtehude's Chaconne in E minor, made in 1938 for RCA Victor (National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico/CD1). In 1940, the Museum of Modern Art in New York sponsored a pioneering concert of Mexican music, which was recorded by Columbia Masterworks. This joint performance by an orchestra and choir of American and Mexican musicians includes traditional Mexican music as well as dances from Chávez's Aztec mythology "Xochipilli" and the ballet music "Four Suns". These are based on prehistoric Mexican legends and are the earliest works of the musical movement known as the "Renaissance of Mexican Music."Originally released as a "Collection of Mexican Music" on SP vinyl, this recording was re-released in 1949 on LP, the most advanced medium at the time, and played a role in bringing the appeal of Chavez and Mexican music to the world at an early stage (CD1). Chavez re-recorded most of the tracks on this SP recording in stereo in 1961 (CD2). When this album was released in the U.S. by Columbia in 1964 under the title "Mexico," High Fidelity magazine praised "both the tunes and the orchestra" and praised "Schotipilli" as a "moving and exotic Aztec recreation.
