Rare and previously unreleased recordings from just before signing with Riverside! This is the rare and previously unreleased material from "One Day" in 1959, the year that completely knocked out the Wes Montgomery & Eddie Higgins Trio Olin Keepnews! Resonance, which has released numerous unearthed recordings, is once again releasing rare and previously unreleased recordings. Following the release of "Echoes of Indiana Avenue," the archive "In the Beginning" has been released, but this source was recorded in January 1959. In other words, this recording fills the gap between "In the Beginning" and the debut, and was recorded just before the band signed a contract with Riverside. Moreover, playing with Wuess is Eddie Higgins, a very popular pianist in Japan. This is with a guitar quartet backed by that trio! The owner of the sound tape is Duncan Sheets, a photographer and local Jazz historian in Indianapolis.Duncan Sheets was also one of the authors of the liner notes for "In the Beginning" and contributed valuable documents that vividly conveyed the Indianapolis scene of the time surrounding Wes, including his performance with Cannonball Adderley, who sadly passed away in 2014. He was one of the last people to know about the jazz scene at that time. Mr. Sheets, who was the last person to know about the jazz scene at that time, left the tapes to Resonance producer Zev Feldman. Zev Feldman, who followed his wishes, is once again active in clearing the rights. With the support of Eddie Higgins' wife, Meredith Ambrosio, who is also a singer herself, as well as Wes' family and friends, this release was made possible. The swingy Higgins' playing is also attractive, and the performance, which showcases a number of familiar tunes, plays to the fullness of Wes just before his debut. In addition to the sing-songy single-tone phrasing, octave playing also made many appearances throughout this period.In particular, "Stompin at Savoy," a medium-tempo, four-beat swinging rhythm, was a real stunner, showing off an amazingly brilliant octave technique! In fact, Riverside producer Orin Keepnews went to see Wes live for the first time in 1959 and was completely knocked out. He was so shocked that he called his wife and asked her to "bring him back to the real world" as described in the liner notes of "In the Beginning" (p10 in English/p7-8 in Japanese). The performance is exactly what you are looking for. The two archives, "Echoes of Indiana Avenue" and "In the Beginning," are of course valuable, but the simple composition of an album composed of a single day's performance is also very attractive. The cover photo shows a performance in Indianapolis, Indiana. The cover photo is a night view of Indianapolis, and since the LP was released first and has been very well received, this is the long-awaited CD release!
