Justin Dello Joio is a New York native whose father is the acclaimed composer Norman Dello Joio. Justin studied composition with Persichetti and Roger Sessions. Although Justin states that his early compositions were influenced by Lutoslawski and Jacob Dragman, his most recent works on this disc are overwhelmingly American East Coast in their solid writing style, rewarding sound drama, and brilliant, brilliant orchestration. The piano concerto "Across the Sea" is particularly rewarding, thanks to Garrick Ohlsson's piano solo and the masterful stick work of Alan Gilbert. While taking a major contemporary musical style, the piece has a romantic flavor, and it is no exaggeration to say that it is one of the most outstanding piano concertos of the 21st century. The brass quintet "Blue and Golden Music" was written for organ and brass quintet, and is a beautiful work reminiscent of stained glass windows in a church. It is a must-listen, especially for brass players. Tobu Shoji Co.
