Composed as his graduation project from the Leningrad Conservatory, the first symphony was a huge success and catapulted Shostakovich to the world stage. The 15th Symphony, with its interesting allusions to various works, was his last symphony. Symphony No. 14, a series of songs on the theme of death, sung by the soprano and bass soloists, is the culmination of his creative work and incorporates avant-garde techniques. Andris Nelsons, born in 1978 in Riga, Latvia, then still a Soviet territory, has a unique perspective on the performance of Shostakovich's music.
