Description:
Miyu Morita’s cover of Seiko Matsuda’s song is coming out on 7-inch vinyl! Following the release of a CD featuring a fresh cover of Seiko Matsuda’s classic summer hit—her first general release under her own name—the 7-inch vinyl version is now set to be released! The anthem for the summer of 2026 is complete. This project shines a light on the “music production” side of Sun Music—which launched the careers of numerous popular singers and idols from the 1970s through the 1980s, including Seiko Matsuda, Yu Hayami, and Yukiko Okada—and aims to deliver its outstanding musical legacy to Japan’s younger generation and music fans around the world. Following the first installment featuring Kengo Kakudate of YOGEENEWWAVES, the second featuring FNCY (ZEN-LA-ROCK/G.RINA/Chinza DOPENESS), and the third from “TokimekiRecords,” Miyu Morita makes his debut. This release, his first commercially distributed work under his own name, is a cover of a Seiko Matsuda song selected by Morita himself. Morita describes this summer classic as “that feeling of letting the nostalgic breeze ruffle your hair as you sing along—it’s irresistible.” He has reimagined the track with deep respect, produced by his close friend, singer and artist SPENSR. “In the impersonal, fast-paced Tokyo I call home, my love is always fleeting, and my memories tend to grow cold and faded. I explored the tempo and chord progressions to express that feeling.” “Wheat-Colored Mermaid,” reimagined with a sound truly meant for 2026, is this summer’s anthem. Whenever I rode in my father’s car, Seiko Matsuda’s music would always be playing, and I’d listen to it from the back seat. She was the first person to teach me about that pale pink heart that makes my chest tighten. “Wheat-Colored Mermaid” is my No. 1 love song. It’s a bit daunting, but I’m going to sing it. I love it.
