After graduating from the University of Helsinki, he became a student of Franz Schreker at the University of Music in Vienna, and further studied with Alexandre Giloti in St. Petersburg and Alfred Cortot in Paris. Upon his return to Finland, he taught piano at the Helsinki Conservatory and was later appointed professor at the Sibelius Academy.As a composer, Hannikainen composed extensively for piano, shifting his style from late Romanticism to Impressionism, and also composed music for films. Debussy's Silhouettes is considered a representative example of his impressionist style, and his Capriccio Variations is considered the most important variation piece in the Finnish piano repertoire. Hannikainen wrote more than 100 solo songs. From a young age, he composed to Finnish and Swedish poems by contemporary poets such as Eino Leino, L. Onerva, and Veikko Antelo Koskennier, and dedicated them to his mother, Alfhild "Alli" Hannikäinen, a singer, and other well-known singers. and other well-known singers. The album features a program of 32 early songs, including one of Hannikäinen's most popular songs, "Peace" from 1906. Kirsi Tihonen, a graduate of the Sibelius Academy, represented Finland in the 1995 BBC Cardiff International Vocal Competition, where she won the "Song prize," leading to her international career. Timo Lihonen also studied at the Sibelius Academy. He has long-term contracts with the Rhine Deutsche Oper and the Kiel Opera, and is active as an opera and recital singer in many countries. She is accompanied by Terhi Dostal, who released "Finnish Piano Works" (HC 23048) with music by Hannikainen, Aare Merikanto, and Sibelius. Detailed program notes (in German and English) written by her have replaced the original poems in the booklet. (King International)
